Infections of Skin and Soft Tissue

By Brian M. Carty, MD, MSPH

Updated 12/29/07

“The death of Keflex (cephalexin),” to quote the late Merle Sande MD, infectious diseases specialist, University of Washington School of Medicine, refers to the fact that Keflex is now usually an obsolete drug for skin and soft tissue infections. The increasingly prevalent MRSA bacteria (methicillin resistant Staph. aureus) are usually resistant to Keflex. If your doctor gives you this drug for a skin infection or an abscess, this is probably an inappropriate antibiotic choice.
